I haven’t been in a very healthy state of mind as of recently, mostly just the past few days. I figured that I would get this post done now just because I always feel bad about giving skin updates months after the time has passed. This is the most recent update of my skin, the images I took on September 16th, 2012 and the video I took yesterday, September 30th, 2012.

As you all may or may now know, I recently decided to give up my “all natural” regimen. I was using all natural products through July and August and didn’t feel like it was helping my acne at all. Of course, I had clear weeks but overall I didn’t think my skin liked it all that much. I really had high hopes for all the nice, organic oils but something didn’t sit right with my skin. It was actually working pretty well during July but towards August my skin blew up on me. I think it might have been a bad batch of jojoba oil I ordered – which was weird because I ordered from the same place I ordered my first bottle of jojoba oil. It might have been just that my skin doesn’t like the castor or jojoba oil. Or maybe it was sensitive to the manuka honey. I know it didn’t like that Japanese charcoal soap at all.

So now I’ve been in a limbo of trying to put together a new skincare regimen. I’m still splurging unnecessary money on new products, trying new things and switching out others. Falling back on some oldies and trying to find the “perfect” gentle cleanser and moisturizer. It doesn’t really feel like anything I’m doing is right anymore. It’s like my skin has reached a plateau and it’s never going to get any better.

For this month, I tried to do pictures but the changing weather means that it’s darker in the mornings and earlier in the evenings. I’m either in class, in clinicals or at work when there is still light out so I can’t take any pictures at that time. And yes, I work on weekends too because in addition to my office job during the week, I babysit and nanny on the side. Because of the changing lighting and my decrease in time to edit pictures together, I tried to do a video of my acne as well.

Let me know if you guys prefer the video or not. The only problem with the video is that it’s lower quality – so I’ll still definitely try to include at least one set of HD-pictures of my skin for you all each month.

As you can see, my cheeks are pretty much “the same”. I personally think they might actually be looking better than previously. Unfortunately, I also have some persistent nodules and deep acne lesions on both of my temples as well as in between my eyebrows (not pictured). As disgusting as it sounds, they pop and the pus drains but in a day or so, new lesions crop up. I’m assuming there’s a deeper cyst of pus below the skin because the nodule/lump under the skin in those areas are always larger than the pustule.

My largest problem area right now is the outer areas of my cheeks and my jawline. You can see the redness, the cysts and the pustules all around my jawline and underneath my jaw spreading down to my neck. It hurts an insane amount to even turn my head or tilt my head upwards because the stretching motion pulls on the cysts underneath.

My only saving grace right now is that it’s the fall again and that means scarf season. I’m being very careful to wash my scarves after every day — don’t worry, my collection of scarves is ridiculous enough for me to actually keep this up.

I’ll be making a haul/new regimen post soon, once everything I’ve purchased comes in.

Like I had mentioned in the last update, I recently switched to an all-natural skincare regimen. I stuck with it for all of June, so below is a pretty accurate representation of how my skin has reacted to it. I’m going to continue sticking to this natural skincare regimen for as long as I can, I really hope it works out!

Again, I’m so sorry for the huge difference in the quality of the pictures! Some of them were taken at night, since that was the only time I was home. It’s been a hell of a month, between work, school and clinicals!

Below is a compilation of how my skin has been doing for the month of May. At the end of this month, I did make a big change in my daily skincare regimen — but the images below don’t reflect that since I only started the new regimen around May 29th.

Sorry that I’ve been lagging on the skin updates recently! I know the lighting and color in all of the pictures seem different — some I look really yellow, some I look blue. Some are really bright and some are super dark. It just depends on where I take my pictures and when – I try to usually do it by the window in natural lighting but sometimes the weather/clouds don’t allow that so I have to do it under artificial lighting. My camera also does this weird thing where it tries to “auto-correct” for lighting problems, so sometimes I’ll have absolutely no color in my pictures (aka blue-toned). I just need a better camera but for now, sorry!

So, I thought it was only a month since my last skin update but I just back-tracked on my previous posts and realized that it’s been about two and a half months since my last update. For that, I sincerely apologize. January was an extremely busy month for me, since I had observations and clinical rotations every weekend – that month just flew by me.

But I have for you a set of periodic pictures that I’ve been taking for this month that tracks the progress of my skin (which is actually important, because I’ve recently been playing around a lot with my regimen):

Acne

February 3rd. This was how my skin looked before I began the current regimen that you see on my Regimen page. Scroll to the bottom of that page under ‘previous products’ to see what my previous regimen was made up of before the switch.

Acne

February 4th. Same comments as above.

Acne

February 5th. Same comments as above.

Acne

February 11th. I began the regimen you see listed on the Regimen page on February 7th.

Acne

February 12th.

Acne

February 15th. Around this time, I began to use a Japanese silicon facial brush (I got it off ebay, I suppose it’s a Sasatinnie Japanese accessory facial cleansing brush rip-off) to exfoliate morning and night along with my cleanser and decided to stop using my usual exfoliating scrub. Bad decision – perhaps it was too much exfoliating but I began to seriously break out on my left cheek and all around my lips and chin. My skin was also excessively dry and parched. Due to the dryness of my skin and the dry winter atmosphere, I also stopped using Naris Up’s Hyaluronic Acid Skin Lotion because it contains a lot of alcohol and replaced it with the HARUHADA Hyaluronic Acid Moisture Skin Lotion. These additions aren’t currently reflected on my current regimen page!

Acne

February 17th.

Acne

February 19th.

Acne

February 19th. I decided to stop using the silicon facial cleansing brush morning and night, and instead only use it at night. It seems to have helped decrease inflammation but my skin was still flaking excessively – which is embarrassing during the day when I’m literally picking flakes of skin off my face (like a snake shedding, no joke).

Acne

February 27th. Two days ago, I started to add 2-3 drops of jojoba oil back into my regimen to help moisturize my face. If my face is feeling particularly dry, I’ll even double up again and add 1-2 drops of jojoba oil to my Olay Complete moisturizer. I use it morning and night as an additional moisturizer, along with all the other parts of my current regimen. My skin has started purging, since there are a ton of small papules that have come to surface on my cheeks and jawline – but they all easily “pop” and appear to be really close to the skin’s surface. Generally none of the deep, nodular acne that I am usually more prone to but there are still some – which isn’t out of the ordinary for me. During these past 3-4 days, I’ve been mostly struggling with a patch on my left cheek and a welt of nodular/cystic acne around my left lip and jawline (see above).

Acne

February 27th. My recent breakout along my left jawline.

I’m still continuing to stick with the jojoba oil even through the slight purging because it has really helped prevent flaking. I haven’t had any flaking since I started using it to moisturize. I’m going to give it a little longer, hopefully it will end when my pores have nothing else to “purge”. I will keep everyone updated.

I thought that it would be helpful for me to track the condition of my skin as I was making so many changes to my regimen in the course of one month. I also know that it can be difficult to convey the condition of my skin via pictures, since my camera is cheap and doesn’t take good pictures – not to mention the differences in lighting and angle that can change how a person’s skin can look. I take all pictures in macro mode and in natural lighting by a window, so they are relatively accurate. Hope this was helpful for everyone; I will be more on top of skin updates from now on!

Has two months really already passed since my last update? I assume another skin update is long overdue. I apologize for not being around – I’m in an accelerated Master’s in Nursing program right now and this first year is basically regular RN school (normally 2-4 years) crammed into 11 months. So…I hope you’ll see where I’m coming from.

I’ve also added a few updated details to my current regimen. I have made some changes to it in the few months that I have been gone but I was careful to chart when I began introducing new products, so that I can give proper reviews for them in the future. One of the main reasons I began to introduce new products was because winter season was approaching and since I recently moved to a place where it snows (BIG difference from sunny California), I figured I needed a lot of hydrating products for my skin.

Other than what you see in the pictures, I also have a relatively small papule on my forehead, in between my eyebrows. If you remember my Face Mapping article, acne in this region is most associated with an excess of smoking/alcohol. Another perfect example that face mapping may indeed be relevant: I just finished my first semester of my intense 11-month nursing program and literally right after the final (ended at 12PM) – our entire class when out to a bar and did some good ‘ol (and well deserved) day drinking. I was buzzing within the hour and drunk the entire day. And almost immediately – this papule between my eyebrows formed.

The jawline acne on my left-side has improved although I haven’t felt much of a change in the acne along my right jawline. One side is better than both, I guess. Also, I just realized that in my previous skin updates, I may or may not have gotten my right and left confused. Whoops. So much for a college education!

…Power Rangers. Ahaha, no, I digress. I’m here to talk about the shift and changes in my acne. It’s been well over a month since I last did any update on how my skin is doing. It’s been tough with exams and things that have been happening in the family. I’m not going to dwell on this though in case I end up jinxing it and shit starts to hit the fan again.

I do want to touch on something though – my hormones have been out of control. I actually think this is why my acne started to flare up. How did I come to this conclusion? Get ready girls for something completely TMI but it just to give you some insight: I had my period twice in August (with only about 5 days break in between), had my period for the entire month of September (with spotting but virtually no days where I didn’t bleed) and after about a 1 week break, just had it again this month. I haven’t been getting cramps either – and I’m the type who has always gotten major, ripping-your-uterus-out cramps during my period. I have no idea what’s wrong with me but it’s doing no good for my acne.

I’m in nursing school, so I really have no problem talking about anything health-related. For any guys who stumble across this blog and think it’s too much…suck it up. You come talk to me when you start bleeding out of your vagina once a month, ok? Until then, you don’t get to pass judgement.

So how is my acne? So far the acne on my cheeks, upper lip and chin have seriously died down. All that’s really left are red acne marks and scarring – which even that has lightened up significantly. At least, compared to how it looked like in August. My acne seems to have morphed (hence, the title to this post) down to my jawline though. There are several active nodules on both my left and right jawline right now that seems to be slowly shifting down my neck, possibly an indication of how insane my hormones are right now.

Healing acne on my left and right cheek.

Nodular acne along my jawline.

It’s been a slow process but I’m really hoping that I will be able to get the acne along my jawline under control. There are good days and there are bad days – we’ll see. I’ll try to be back with more reviews and updates soon!

For those of you who also suffer from acne (especially to those with severe acne), you’ll know how hard it is to show an image of your face to others. For some reason, seeing a picture hurts so much more than looking in the mirror. It’s like your mind automatically adjusts your vision so that what you see isn’t “as bad” as it really looks. But a camera is merciless. I figured, I needed to do this so that I wouldn’t have to live in fear of my acne.

I would have to say that my acne that you see below is actually not the worse that it has been. At the moment however, I have a feeling that if I let it progress without changing my lifestyle and treatments around…that it would soon return to the extremely severe acne I had a couple years ago.

Right side of face.
Left side of face.
Front of face.

As you can see, my acne is concentrated on the lower portion of my face. I have whiteheads and a few pustules and papules located on my right and left cheek. I mainly have nodules, pustules and papules located on my upper lip, chin and around my jawline. I actually have not had a break out on my forehead regions in several years – not since about sophomore or junior year of high school. Doing some basic research on face mapping and how it can explain acne, I believe that my acne is mainly due to a hormonal imbalance.

In the recent months, I have made a few new “discoveries” and developed a few new “theories” as to how I could go about healing my acne. I will be going into these separate methods of treatment in the next upcoming posts but as a quick rundown, these are some of the things I’ll touch on:

1) Holistic methods of treating my acne.
2) Review of current products I am using. For a quick list, check out my regimen.
